Supreme Court has today directed the Reliance Jio to pay Rs 70 crore to Tata Communications in next 2 weeks.
The Bench was hearing Reliance Jio’s plea against TDSAT order to pay Rs 147 crore as cable landing station usage charges.
The Apex court was approached by the Reliance against the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) order for payment of Rs 147 crore to the Tata Telecom, as cable landing station usage charges.
The matter was earlier presented before Chief Justice of India NV Ramana for urgent hearing. During the hearing the Senior Advocate KV Vishwanathan said that if Tata Telecom goes through with suspension of the user licence due to non-payment of dues, millions of users will be blocked.
The Senior Advocate Arvind Datar said that India has two service providers Bharti Airtel and Tata Telecom. He further said that the company paid Airtel after it took an aggressive stance but the payment had been delayed.
The CJI questioned had asked Jio as to why no action should be taken by Tata if the the dues are not paid. “Subscription has gone up during lockdown, and income has gone up. So, why not pay?” he asked.
