The Supreme Court of India has decided to celebrate its Foundation Day for the very first time on February 4, 2023.
The Apex Court of India came into being on January 28, 1950, two days after India became a republic on January 26, 1950.
The Supreme Court, also known as the Bharatiya Ucchatam Nyayalaya, is the Apex judicial authority and the highest court of the country, which works as the guiding light of the Constitution.
Supreme Court is not only the seniormost court when it comes to constitutional matters, but it also has the final decision making authority in all legal matters other than personal laws. It also has the power of judicial review.
The Head of the Supreme Court and the chief amongst the judges is the Chief Justice of India.
Supreme Court has extensive powers in the form of original, appellate and advisory jurisdictions.
As per media reports, the initiative was the brain child of the CJI, who said that since the Supreme Court organised different events with special reference to the Constitution Day on November 26th every year, it would be a great idea to showcase to the country how the judiciary worked in an ever-changing world.
The event, which would celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court of India, would feature a welcome address by Justice SK Kaul and an address by CJI DY Chandrachud as well.
Chief Justice of Singapore, Justice Sundaresh Menon, has been invited as Chief Guest for the event, who would deliver a lecture on ‘Role of judiciary in a changing world’.
The ceremony would be broadcast live on all social media platforms so that the citizens, especially the younger generation, can tune in to learn more about Indian judiciary.
