The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice T.S. Sivagnanam as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
The Collegium said that while taking note of the fact that incumbent Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava was set to retire on March 30, it has recommended the appointment of Justice Sivagnanam as his successor.
Published on the website of the Supreme Court on Thursday, the resolution said that the Madras High Court, which was one of the largest High Courts of the country, currently had only one Chief Justice from among the Judges whose parent High Court was the Madras High Court, namely Justice S. Manikumar.
Justice S. Manikumar was presently working as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and was set to demit office on April 23 this year, it added.
The Collegium, while taking note of the fact that Madras High Court was the parent High Court of Justice Sivagnanam, said that the consultee judges had approved its proposal to recommend his name for elevation as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
It observed that the period served by Justice Sivagnanam as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court would provide useful experience in his work as Chief Justice of that High Court.
Justice Sivagnanam completed his B.Sc. at Loyola College, Chennai and B.L. from Madras Law College.
He enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in September, 1986. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court in March, 2009 and was made permanent two years later.
After over a decade, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court, where he was sworn-in on October 25, 2021.
