US President nominates Indian-American attorney Arun Subramanian for NY District Judge

The President of United States has nominated the name of Indian-American attorney Arun Subramanian for the position of District Judge at the Southern District of New York.

A statement released on September 2, by the White House states that if confirmed, Subramanian will be the first South Asian judge to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

In Biden’s twenty-sixth round of nominations for federal judicial positions, Subramanian is one of 8 new federal judicial nominees.

Subramanian has been working with the Susman Godfrey LLP in New York since 2007

Prior to that he has worked as a law clerk for three federal judges:

  • For Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court of the United States from 2006 to 2007;
  • For Judge Gerard E Lynch on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York from 2005 to 2006; and
  • For Judge Dennis Jacobs on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2004 to 2005.

A congratulatory statement has been released just after his nomination was announced by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).

In said statement, AB Cruz III, acting president of NAPABA said,“Mr. Subramanian is an experienced trial and appellate attorney with a strong track record of pro bono service. A child of immigrants, he became the first lawyer in his family, and we are proud to see him represent our community. We urge the Senate to swiftly confirm him.”

As per the official records, Subramanian has been working for many year on the pro bono panel for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

In 2022, he has also served as the Chairperson of Susman Godfrey Pro Bono Committee.

Some important matters taken by Subramanian include

1. The cause of public entities and whistleblowers in False Claims Act cases,

2. Case on victims of trafficking in child pornography

3. Case on consumers and individuals injured by unfair and illegal practices

Along with cases on complex commercial litigation, including antitrust, patent infringement, and breach of contract cases.

In 2004, Subramanian received his Juris Doctor degree from the Columbia Law.
