Centre notifies appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

The Union of India on Thursday notified the appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with effect from March 31.

He will take over the post after the retirement of current Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava.

On February 9, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium had proposed the appointment of Justice Sivagnanam as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, not as Acting Chief Justice.

The Collegium had noted in its resolution that the Madras High Court, the parent High Court of Justice Sivagnanam, had only one Chief Justice of a High Court – Justice S. Manikumar of the Kerala High Court.

It said the consultee judges had okayed the Collegium’s proposal to recommend Justice Sivagnanam’s name. Besides, the period which has been served by Justice Sivagnanam as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court would provide useful experience in his work as the Chief Justice of that High Court.

Justice Sivagnanam did his B.Sc. from Loyola College in Chennai and B.L. from Madras Law College. He enrolled in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in September 1986. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court in March 2009 and was made permanent two years later. After over a decade, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court, where he was sworn in on October 25, 2021.
