New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the CBSE to file an affidavit with details of how it intends to hold compartment exam for Class X & XII in September during the Covid pandemic.
The bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna issued the direction while hearing a plea by students seeking cancellation of compartment exam for class X and XII scheduled to be conducted in last week of September. The plea has been filed on behalf of around 2,10,000 students who were placed in the compartment category by CBSE, based on results evaluated by an alternate evaluation method in July.
During the hearing today, the counsel for the petitioner submitted before the court that while the main exam wasn’t conducted, the compartment exams are being conducted by the CBSE. If the exams are conducted in late September, the students will not be able to apply for further studies.
The bench sought clarity from the petitioner counsel on the prayer sought, and where would the students stand if exams aren’t taken.
Advocate Rupesh Kumar appearing on behalf of CBSE informed the court that they are taking all the precautions required. They have increased the centres for compartment exams to 1,278 so now in a class where 40 students could sit, only 12 will sit. Regarding the dates of the exam, he clarified that the notification is expected to come out today and the exams are likely to be in September itself.

Kumar wasn’t satisfied with petitioners’ stand that compartment exams should be cancelled as admissions in Universities will close by the time the exams are conducted. He said that while on the one hand petitioners want cancellation of exams, they are also raising grievance of admissions on the other.
The apex court will hear the matter next on September 10.
