The Indian Armed Forces Tribunal faces multiple challenges in the modern era, not least being involved in an era of gender parity and the ambit of cases it can officially deal with. At an India Legal Research Foundation event, Editor-in-Chief, APN channel, RAJSHRI RAI spoke with JUSTICE RAJENDRA MENON, the chairperson of Armed Forces Tribunal on a range of issues. Excerpts:
The case is of 3 naval officers who were part of the original case of 2020 in the Supreme Court. Seven others who were part of the initial proceedings have been given Permanent Commission. These three naval commanders are pushing that they also be given the same treatment.
The counsel for the petitioner contends that reinstatement in service would cause difficulties to the petitioner. However neither are the said difficulties described nor is the counsel for the petitioner, on our asking, also able to enumerate the same.”
On account of the hardships being faced by armed forces personnel, the AFTs principal bench has inaugurated hearings through video conferencing for all 10 regional benches of the tribunal.
