Attempts by the state to conduct a caste-based census came to naught after the Patna High Court ordered a stay. The power to carry it out is vested with the Parliament which enacted Census Act, 1948.
Supreme Court on Monday, adjourned the hearing on the petition seeking caste census. A bench by Justice Nageswara Rao today said one such petition is pending in another bench as well. The Maharashtra government had already filed a petition in the Supreme Court on the subject of caste census.
