The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the arrest of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Nandigram election agent SK Supiyan in the murder case of a BJP leader, being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In a major setback for the Mamata Banerjee government, the five-judge Supreme Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justices IP Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen and Subrata Talukdar on Thursday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged cases of murder and crimes against women during the violence that followed the elections in West Bengal.

The state government’s decision to set up an upper house is a strategic move made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to augment her unfulfilled political and business interests.
