A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the invocation of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) , 1967 by the state of Tripura against members of civil society, including advocates and journalists, who have documented and spoken out against the targeted atrocities in communal violence in the state.
Chief Justice Ramana observed that the Advocates have different opinion on the issue of continuation of virtual court hearing of the cases and that the lawyers have expressed different point of view regarding the decision of the courts to revert to the physical hearing of the cases.
The Supreme Court bench led by CJI N.V. Ramana said the plea was compiled on the strength of newspaper reports and refused to hear it. The plea said Muslims were forcing Hindus in the district to convert to Islam by threatening them with force.
President Ram Nath Kovind nominated Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. He succeeds CJI N.V. Ramana, who held the post earlier.
