A historic judgment by the Supreme Court has brought hope to millions of disabled people, allowing them access to government jobs they were denied till now.
The Supreme Court on Friday allowed persons with disabilities, who have cleared the Civil Services exams, to provisionally apply in the UPSC Selection process for the Indian Police Service (IPS), the Indian Railways Protection Force Service (IRPFS), and the Delhi, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep Police Services.
The dream of a doctor from Arunachal Pradesh becoming an IPS officer could not be fulfilled because his height was 2.5 cm less than the minimum height.
The petition alleged that the Haryana government's move would end secretarial and administrative control of officers of the civil services and affect the effectiveness of the administration.
At a time when the country is faced with increasing security challenges, around 100 posts at the top levels in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been lying vacant for quite some time.
