The Supreme Court has referred to a larger bench the issue of Maratha reservation in Maharashtra while ordering a stay on reservations for them in jobs and admissions.
The Supreme Court has held: "When the court passed specific orders directing the states to file affidavits, the court’s intention was to see the working of the aforesaid acts. Non-filing of affidavit clearly indicates that the states are not interested in implementing the aforesaid enactments.”
"We have decided not to allow people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu till May 31, but allow in stages," Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said.
If the night belonged to wily politicians, the day was won by the Supreme Court with its quiet, dignified, conscientious and calibrated approach in extricating the Constitution from the clutches of those who appear to have little or no heed or need for its proscriptions and prescriptions.
