The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear the Mullaperiyar Dam case expeditiously for the final settlement of all points of dispute. The Court said this while hearing a batch of petitions filed by Kerala-based parties seeking directions to ensure the safety of the 126-year-old dam.
The Kerala government told the Supreme Court that keeping water level at 142 feet will put immense pressure on the 126-year-old Mullaperiyar dam. It will also put lives at stake in several districts downstream. Tamil Nadu has been releasing water due to surfeit rainfall.
In the light of concerns expressed about the flood situation in Kerala, Justices AM Khanwilkar said that “Please understand the anxiety of the other party. The committee needs to make a decision, make a decision and tell us what needs to be the maximum level and till when.
