The pan India awareness and outreach campaign was launched on October 2, and it was set to be concluded on November 14. The event was organised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), to spread awareness about the legal services in every nook and corner of the country.
The aforesaid observation was made by Hon’ble Mr. Justice N.V. Ramana, Chief Justice of India & Patron-in-Chief, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) during the 32nd Central Authority Meeting of NALSA.
Free legal aid and the assurance of its universal availability is important to keep police excesses in check, CJI NV Ramana said recently. He also noted how police stations are the places where rights are easily trampled upon resulting often in custodial deaths and other excesses.
The Supreme Court bench directed that NALSA should issue directions to all the State Legal Service Authorities to ensure that all panel advocates should visit the jail and advise the convicts about their legal rights and assist them in drafting the application to pursue their remedy of premature release.
