The Madras High Court recently upheld the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Act, 2022, but said rummy and poker would not be prohibited under the Act. The decision of the Court is the second such verdict on the constitutionality of laws banning prize money games
The government has ridden piggyback on a Supreme Court order declaring rummy as more of a game of skill than chance, to try and legalise the online gaming industry in India. The MeITy has also proposed a self-regulatory organisation on the lines of the Press Council of India for this industry sector.
The Karnataka High Court has struck down amendments to the Police Act which had criminalised wagering, betting or risking money. This has come as a boon for the online gaming industry.
The Minister for Electronics and Information Technology said that India can be an engine for innovation and growth in online gaming all over the world.
