The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought the Punjab Government's response on a plea filed seeking action against fake social media accounts of the State Police Department of Punjab, and use of the name and emblem of the Punjab Police on such fake social media accounts.
The petition alleged that the Haryana government's move would end secretarial and administrative control of officers of the civil services and affect the effectiveness of the administration.
In the petition, Sanjay Singh had pleaded to quash the defamation case filed by Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikramjit Singh Majithia. Along with this, demand for exemption from personal appearance was also rejected by the High Court.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that the person aggrieved by a defamatory statement must have an element of personal interest. He should either be the person defamed or a family member or near relative in case of a deceased person.
