The Madhya Pradesh High Court, in an interim order granting relief to interfaith couples entering into wedlock, has held as “unconstitutional” a provision in the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act that requires an individual to give a declaration to the district magistrate before undertaking religious conversion.
The Supreme Court has upheld the interim stay imposed by the High Court on Gujarat government's law prohibiting marriage for the purpose of religious conversion.
The Delhi HC directed Delhi Police to provide protection to woman converted to Islam. The petitioner seeks direction against the Jamia Nagar SHO, Delhi govt, UP govt and the DGP of Uttar Pradesh after her family complained threat by state officials media, persons and vigilante groups.
It is further clarified that the fact of the petitioner having converted to Islam would not be a relevant factor while ensuring that there is no interference in the liberty of the petitioners unless there is any allegation by petitioner no.1 regarding forcible conversion.
The petitioner advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay says conversion by hook or crook not only offends Article 14, 21 and 25 of the Constitution but is also against the principles of secularism.
