A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University student Sharjeel Imam in a case pertaining to the violence that occurred on the December 13 and 14, 2019 in Jamia Millia Islamia. Imam was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was also among the several activists accused under UAPA registered by the Delhi Police in the Delhi Riots of 2020.
JNU student Sharjeel Imam, arrested for allegedly making inflammatory speeches during the protests against CAA, told a Delhi court on Monday that he cannot be hammered with sedition as his speeches did not call for violence.
The judge while passing the said orders said, "It is indubitably true that every accused has the fundamental right to free and fair investigation as also trial."
In its Chargesheet, the Delhi Police named Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, Danish, Parvez, Ilyas, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Tahir Hussain, Meeran Haider, Pinjda Tod activists Gulfisha Fatima, Safoora Zargar, Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, as accused of 'criminal conspiracy'.
The Supreme Court today has granted two weeks time to JNU student Sharjeel Imam to file additional documents in his petition seeking clubbing of FIRs registered against him.
