The one-member Tribunal headed by Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.N Patel, on Monday, issued notice in the plea to continue ‘unlawful association’ status to Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.
Appearing on behalf of the NIA, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said since the Bombay High Court order would come into effect on December 8, the agency's challenge to the order should be heard as soon as possible before it becomes pointless.
The CJI said the debates focus on statements taken out of context with everybody set on pursuing their own agenda. Even minor observations by the courts were being turned into controversial issues, he noted.
