The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging increasing incidents of violence among inmates in Tihar Jail, Delhi. Reports said in yet another incident of inmate clash inside the prison, a 25-year-old prisoner was beaten up by another on September 22, the sixth such incident this month alone.
The Allahabad High Court on January 06 held that after the lodging of FIR, the arrest can be made by the police at will and that there is no definite period fixed for the police to arrest an accused.
The arrest of a journalist en route to Hathras has unveiled the draconian features of the Act, under which anyone can be arrested for a period of six months without any proof of anti-national activities. It raises serious questions about violation of human rights.
