UK regulators have stripped China’s TV channel China Global Television Network (CGTN) of its licence, citing lack of editorial control and links with China’s ruling Communist Party. Communications watchdog Ofcom confirmed that it has revoked the licence. CGTN is an English language satellite news channel available in the UK. Ofcom started looking into the channel after several people had filed complaints, saying it violated rules on fairness and accuracy. The decision has come as a major setback for CGTN, which was part of the Chinese government’s push to expand its soft power and burnish its image abroad.
