The Rajasthan High Court has been informed by the state government that the Committee constituted on High Court’s direction has made recommendations for an increase of wages of prisoners keeping in view the observations made by the Court.
The division bench of Justice Rameshwar Vyas and Justice Sangeet Lodha passed this order while hearing a D.B. civil writ petition filed by Indrajeet Singh. The Additional Advocate General submitted that pursuant to the directions issued by the Court order on September 3, 2020, a committee was constituted which has made recommendations for increase of wages of prisoners keeping in view the observation made by this Court.
On September 3, the Rajasthan High Court had declared that non-revision of wages payable to the prisoners for the last five years is ex facie violative of provisions of Rule 31 of the Rajasthan Prison Rules, 1951 and amounts to defiance of directions issued by the Supreme Court.
The Court has directed the State Government to constitute a committee for determining the quantum of equitable wages payable to the prisoners within a period of two weeks.
The Court had also instructed that the committee shall make its recommendation for the revision of wages payable to the prisoners for various work within a period of two months from the date of constitution of the committee by the State Government.

On Monday, keeping in view the observations made by the Court, the counsel sought two weeks’ time to file compliance report. The matter has been listed for further hearing on January 18.
