The Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporations in the capital and other concerned bodies, to file a fresh status report on the steps taken to deal with mosquito infestation in the capital, in view of the ongoing monsoon season.
The bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh on Tuesday passed the order on a suo motu PIL taken by a coordinate Bench, pertaining to the mosquito menace in the national capital.
On May 24, the bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Jasmeet Singh had taken suo motu cognisance of the mosquito infestation in the city and said that if timely action is not taken, it could lead to vector-borne diseases, which may further complicate the existing Covid-19 situation.
The Bench had observed that on account of the prevailing pandemic condition, the steps taken by the Delhi Government and civic authorities have taken a back seat and thus, these authorities need to pull their socks up.
The court observed, “Every year, during and after the monsoon months, one sees a surge in vector-borne diseases, such as Dengue, Chikungunya and Malaria. If the mosquito infestation is not contained presently, with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of such diseases would lead to myriad problems and complexities.”
The Bench, thereafter, placed the matter before the Bench of Chief Justice and Justice Jyoti Singh, which is dealing with PILs as per roster. The matter has been posted for further hearing on September 16.
