The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the state of Uttar Pradesh to file a status report over the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, in which eight people lost their lives on October 3, after three SUVs ran over them.
A three-Judge bench, led by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and also comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohil, took up the suo motu plea, registered on the basis of a letter petition sent to it by two Advocates, seeking inquiry into the violent incident. The court will hear the matter next on Friday.
Justice Surya Kant said, “These all are very unfortunate incidents, eight people have lost their lives, some of them are farmers, journalists, other persons, we want to know against whom you have registered the FIR and whether they are arrested or not? What is the Status?”
AAG Garima Prasad, appearing for Uttar Pradesh, said it’s a very unfortunate incident.
CJI replied, “We also feel the same way, eight people lost their lives. Grievance is you are not doing the investigation properly and not registering FIRs.”
Prasad apprised the Court that they have registered the FIR and also constituted an SIT and an enquiry commission headed by a Retired judge. “The entire incident will be properly looked into and we will file a status report,” she said.
The Court was also informed by Advocate Amritpal Singh that mother of the deceased Lovepreet Singh in Lakhimpur Kheri incident is in a critical condition. He sought direction to the authorities for providing best medical facilities to the woman.
The CJI directed the AAG to immediately look into it. “One of the lady who lost her son, needs immediate medical attention. Immediately communicate to your state government and provide her medical treatment,” he ordered.
