The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday issues a fresh notice to national general secretary of Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, apprising him that the earlier notice summoning him for questioning related to the school-for-jobs scam has been kept in abeyance till further orders of the Supreme Court.
Earlier on Monday, the national agency had sent a notice to the AITC MP, summoning him to its Kolkata office for investigation, following allegations by arrested Trinamool Congress youth leader Kuntal Ghosh, an accused in the case.
The Supreme Court had yesterday stayed the Calcutta High Court order, which gave permission to both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to question Banerjee till April 24.
Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had alleged during a public meeting on March 29 that persons in custody were being pressurised to name him as part of the case.
Another accused in the case, Kuntal Ghosh, had also alleged that he was being pressurised by the investigators to take the name of Banerjee. Ghosh was in ED custody after his arrest till February 2, and was in CBI custody from February 20 to 23.
Earlier on Monday, the Apex Court Bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice P.S. Narasimha had stayed the Calcutta High Court order against Banerjee.
The Apex Court has listed the matter for further hearing on April 24.
As per the order, till the next date of listing, there shall be stay on all action against the petitioner in relation with the directions passed in the impugned order.
On April 13, the Calcutta High Court had ordered a probe by the Central agencies into Banerjee’s alleged role in irregularities in recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff at government schools.
