The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to former Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra for 15 days to attend the last rites of his father in law who expired this week.
A division bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and M.R. Shah has passed this order to attend the last rites of his father in law as he died on May 31.
Sanjay Chandra was arrested by the Economic Offenses Wing of Delhi Police on the night of March 31, 2017 on charges of financial irregularities. The police arrested him under sections 420, 406 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code. There is an allegation against them that they were wrongly channeling the funds of one project to another. His arrest was made after a complaint was made by investors.
Sanjay was in jail for the past several years for a bunch of cheating and fraud cases in relation to non-delivery of houses and diversion of money. There are allegations against him that he was wrongly investing one project’s funds in another project. Sanjay Chandra was arrested following a complaint by investors.

On January 20, the Supreme Court had ordered the central government to take over Unitech. The Supreme Court had appointed former Haryana IAS officer YS Malik as the CMD of Unitech. On December 7, 2018, the Supreme Court ordered a forensic audit of Unitech.
