The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file a detailed affidavit on Lakhimpur Kheri incident, narrating the steps taken to protect the witnesses and also explain why bail granted to accused Ashish Mishra should be not cancelled.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday has constituted the one-man commission which will be led by former Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to oversee the Uttar Pradesh's Special Investigation Team probe into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.
Earlier, the SC bench directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide protection to witnesses under the Witness Protection Scheme. The bench also said that the statements of other witnesses should be recorded before the judicial magistrate under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and expedite the examination of digital evidence by experts.
A letter petition has been filed in the Allahabad High Court, seeking CBI probe into the recent violence at Lakhimpur Kheri, in which eight people died and several were injured on October 3.
